Why is Cyriel Dessers Struggling in Scotland?

Owing to his goals scoring exploits and pedigree in the Europa Conference League and Italy Serie A, Rangers fans had expected that Nigeria international Cyriel Dessers will hit the ground running.

But that has not been the case.

3 goals contributions (goals and assists) in 10 league matches are seen as most unacceptable to fans of the Scottish giants.

Take a trip to Turkey and you will see how Paul Onuachu has defined "hitting the ground running". The beanpole striker - who is often seen as surplus to requirements by a bevy of Super Eagles fans - has garnered 5 goals contributions in 7 league matches since ditching England where his star failed to shine.

Whereas Dessers is held in higher regards by more Super Eagles fans, it is actually Onuachu whose current form justifies Super Eagles invitation in this time. After all, Turkish and Scottish leagues are of similar standards in my view.

What has gone wrong for Dessers in Scotland?

Well, Dessers believes Rangers fans are just raising needless storm in a teacup.

He reckons that there is time for him to accumulate very many goals before the end of the season.

"My stats this season are not bad, but I don’t think it is great either. Before the season, I set a goal of 25 goal contributions, so I’m on target in that regard.” Said Dessers.

Personally I (the writer of this article) had also expected Dessers to hit the ground running in Scotland. But his form has been indifferent. Already in the periphery of the Super Eagles, expecting him to make the Afcon squad on this form seems impossible.

But anything is possible.

I like Onuachu and Dessers but would I would happily pick Dessers if hard pressed to pick one of the two.

But on present form, Onuachu deserves to be in the Super Eagles ahead of the Rangers man.
