Was It Right For U-20 Goalkeeper Saheed Jimoh To Dump Nigeria For New Contract In French League?

Updated: May 10, 2023

It is now confirmed that Flying Eagles third-choice goalkeeper Saheed Jimoh will not participate at the U20 World Cup after he jumped ship to swim for a lucrative professional contract in France.

Coach Bosso moved speedily to replace Jimoh with Mavlon FC young shot stopper Otoblo John Audu.

Tall and agile goalkeeper, Jimoh was third-choice at both the WAFU B qualifiers in May last year as well as the U20 AFCON in Egypt in March.

Chijioke Aniagboso and Nathaniel Nwosu are ahead of him in the pecking order.

Fans are now divided as to whether Jimoh did the right thing to choose club ahead of country.

Being third choice meant his chances of seeing action in Argentina are not different from what he endured in the Wafu tournament and in the U-20 Afcon (where he was rooted to the bench throughout both tournaments).

If you have an opportunity of a lifetime, it is good to take it within the lifetime of that opportunity. Opportunity comes once so he elected to pursue this rare chance in France. I can only wish him well.

If his career takes off in the French league, I don't think his actions of dropping the Flying Eagles team this time will count against him in future.

Only time will tell.
