The Super Eagles goalkeeping department needs urgent attention as Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho are clearly not there yet. They will both come good no doubt but for this year's 2023 Afcon qualifiers and the tournament proper next year, we need competent net minders.
Having said that, Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has asked fans to overlook recent shortcomings of the duo because they will improve in time.
"One mistake is not the end of the world," said Ighalo. "Okoye is a good goalkeeper. Uzoho is a good goalkeeper and they will grow and learn from this Afcon and world cup qualifiers experience. But they need support.” That said, a fresh pair of gloves is needed in that department to offer competition. This new goalkeeper does not have to be registered with a club in a mainstream league, he doesn't even have to play week in week out. He only has to possess razor sharp reflexes and be an upgrade on Okoye and Uzoho. We should by now have eased Daniel Akpeyi out. Okoye's improvements will continue to be monitored, Uzoho should also continue getting better in Cyprus. But sadly both of them do not currently inspire confidence. Long range low shots are especially an issue. It will be great to see a fresh face in that department when the Super Eagles camp opens in the coming months.
