Explosive Nigeria defensive midfielder Christie Ucheibe will play in the group stages of this year’s Uefa Champions League after her club Benfica clinched a 2:1 win against Rangers yesterday to progress on 5:3 aggregate.
A close-range finish from Rangers' 16-year-old Emma Watson in 87 minutes took the tie into extra time at 3-3 on aggregate after both teams had given no quarter up till then.
But a solo goal from Canada striker Cloe Lacasse in 93 minutes and a late breakaway finish from Jessica Silva in 111 minutes gave Ucheibe's Benfica what they needed to blast into the group stages.
The 2023 world cup bound Nigeria midfielder, who did not participate in the first leg a fortnight ago, was a 109 minute substitute. She helped her team maintain their shape and see out the rest of the match.
Nigeria now has three players in this year’s Uefa Champions League after Halimat Ayinde of Rosengård joined Asisat Oshoala's Barcelona.
