Undoubtedly, Sadiq Umar, 23 years old, has thrown down the gauntlet to all Nigerian centre forwards in the periphery of Super Eagles invitation that he is the man to beat for that invitation after posting another peerless performance for Almeria this weekend.
In a feat of ingenuity, Sadiq scored 1 goal and provided 1 assist with the glow and glitter generated by each effort brighter and more sparkling than any Swarovski Shimmer Effect.
Well in the middle of the pitch in 25 minutes, Umar – with sleight of feet and speed of thought – sold a dummy to 2 defenders, turning them inside out before picking out his fellow striker (Corpas) with a glorious long ball that continues to draw gasps of amazement from those who have seen his piece of brilliance. Corpas did much justice to Sadiq Umar’s masterclass by finishing with aplomb to give Almeria a 1 goal lead at that point.
Eager to remind everyone of his aerial prowess, Umar then met a cross in 78 minutes with an expertly guided header that looped high up the air before dropping and lodging in the part of the net where no goalkeeper in the world could dream of reaching. Almeria eventually won 3:1.
Sadiq’s all round play was simply and utterly brilliant. A fine example of a compelling display from a player making a compelling case for Super Eagles invitation.
He now has 11 goals and 4 assists across 20 games for Almeria since joining them.
Super Eagles beckons? In the past, Sadiq Umar has spoken about his belief of warranting Super Eagles invitation. These days, he is letting his feet and head do the talking, first in Serbia and now in Spain. If he keeps up this sort of scintillating performances in the coming weeks, it will be a major shock should his name be omitted from the Super Eagles list to prosecute March qualifiers. Of all the fringe Super Eagles strikers out there, Sadiq Umar is arguably by far the most skillful. The techniques he employs in getting his goals and creating assists are of the elite spectrum as these engender craft, guile, trickery, purposeful-continuous movement, vision, positioning, temerity and fine finishes to mention but a few. I can watch his goal scoring clips every day of the week, twice on Sundays. Sadiq definitely deserves a look in from national team handlers. More performances like the one of this weekend and it will be near impossible to ignore him.
