Has Sadiq Umar Been Unfairly Overlooked For Recent Super Eagles Invitations?

Nigeria and Valencia forward Umar Sadiq says he is considering retiring from the Super Eagles after being overlooked by national team handlers, as reported on so many social media feeds.

According to a report on Facebook, Umar said: "I am thinking of retiring from the Nigerian national team, but I will make the final decision when the new season begins."

The 29 year old bean-pole centre forward was last called up for Super Eagles duties in March 2025: well over a year ago. Even at that, he was an unused substitute in the 2 world cup qualifiers of that March.

In his absence, strikers like Arokodare, Moffi, and Onuachu have complemented Osihmen and Adams in being the preferred choices to lead the charge for the Super Eagles in front.

Now, a disappointed Sadiq Umar is weighing up his options.

"I was not called up (for the most recent Super Eagles matches)." Said Umar. "Maybe my profile is not the type they need, and there are other players doing well in the team because, as you know, Nigeria is blessed with abundant talent." He stressed.

"There is still time for me to make the final decision on whether or not to retire from the Super Eagles. That is why I said I will wait for the new season to start before I decide." He mentioned.

The Olympic bronze medalist striker might be slightly unhappy about recent Super Eagles snubs but I think retiring from the team would be premature.

Obviously, Coach Chelle's tactical formation accommodates strikers of his ilk, stature and build, hence why Onuachu and Durosimi continue to attract invitations.

Should Sadiq Umar play-the-long-game and exercise some patience, productively produced pristine performances in club football in the coming seasons might just swing the pendulum of Super Eagles invitation back his way.

There's still time, there's still route back to the national team for this centre forward.
