Premier League club Southampton completed the signing of beanpole Nigeria centre forward Paul Onuachu from Belgian outfit, KRC Genk. This move has divided opinions because Genk are a top Belgian club whereas Southampton are relegation battlers in the English Premier League.
Onuachu penned a three-and-a-half year contract with the Saints.
Great move for Onuachu. It is always a dream of Nigerian players to play in a league that represents the pinnacle of global league football at some point in their careers (even if it is a relegation battler).
The English Premier League to many observers is the Mecca of league football and Onuachu now has the chance to pay his pilgrimage with uplifting centre forward performances.
I am really chuffed for him.
Now he has the chance to prove doubters wrong. It is a given that football played in the English Premier League is predominantly fast paced. That still didn’t stop average-speed strikers like Drogba, Giroud and Crouch making their mark.
I expect Onuachu to follow suit.
