Good news for the NPFL as another African country draws a player from Nigeria for Afcon qualifiers

Afrofooty understands that Akwa United goalkeeper Jean Efala has been named in Cameroon’s squad for this month’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Cape Verde and Rwanda.

Earlier in the week, Benin Republic added Enyimba Defender Nabil Yarou in their squad to face Nigeria and Sierra Leone in the last round of Afcon qualifiers.

It makes me very happy indeed that the Nigeria Professional Football League has players representing the main national teams of other African countries for the coming Cup of Nations qualifiers. This augurs well for the respectability of our own league as a product. First it was Benin and now it is Cameroon. Others are rumoured to follow. If this trend continues, I won’t be surprised if a number of NPFL players feature for national teams in the tournament proper next year. The league re-started recently and has continued uninterrupted. Long may this continue. I pray player wages continue to be competitive and that players aren’t owed wages. I pray the league continues to be accessible on television and the app created. I pray the fanbase continues to grow. If these and many other positive measures continue to thrive, then perhaps the league can return to the good old days when the likes of Eyimba and others ruled the African landscape.
