Does Brian Idowu still have a future with the Super Eagles?

Reports reaching Afrofooty indicate that near-forgotten Super Eagles left full back Brian Idowu is a wanted man by Russian Premier League newcomers FC Khimki who see him as a worthy addition in their quest to mount a formidable outing in the league next season.

It is however doubtful they can currently afford his services on a permanent deal hence a loan move is being considered.

Following a decent outing with Nigeria at the 2018 Fifa World Cup in his country of birth, Idowu made a high profile move from Amkar Perm to league giants Lokomotiv Moscow where he had expected to further enhance his reputation as solid and spectacular full back.

However, his stay at Lokomotiv has been far less spectacular having struggled for game-time in the last 2 seasons culminating in him losing his slot in the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

He made only 13 appearances out of 30 in the league during the 2018/19 season whilst going 2 better with 15 appearances in the just concluded season in the Russian Premier League.

For Nigeria after the 2018 World Cup, Idowu missed a number of Afcon qualifiers and was omitted altogether from the 2019 Afcon squad to Egypt.

The 28 year old is now currently behind Ola Aina, Jamilu Collins, Shehu Abdullahi, Chidozie Awaziem and even injured Tyrone Ebuehi in manager Gernot Rohr's pecking order of fullbacks. Fresh options like Kingley Ehizibue and Zaidu Sanusi are expected to be unveiled for Nigeria soon which would add further strain on his chances in the Super Eagles.

Brian Idowu made a blistering start to his national team career racing through to stab home a delicious goal against Argentina in a 2017 friendly match. That goal and his overall contributions in the encounter raised a lot of hopes which a section of Super Eagles fans believe he never fulfilled.

If this move to FC Khimki materialises, Idowu will be hoping to revive a once hugely promising club career which would in turn help resurrect his dwindling fortunes with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

The Russian-born defender has represented only Russian clubs in his career: outfits he has turned out for include Smena-Zenit and Zenit St. Petersburg before going pro with Amkar Perm.

Idowu currently has a contract with Lokmotiv Moscow until the end of the 2020-2021 season.
