Can Saudi Based Eddy Onazi make a shock return to the Super Eagles?

Technically speaking, Afcon 2013 hero Eddy Onazi remains available for Super Eagles selection despite his injury induced absence from the national team. The diminutive defending midfielder last played for Nigeria against England in June 2018 .

Since then, unstable club situations and injuries have kept the door of the national team firmly closed to Onazi.

But he is yet to retire.

The 29 year old is set to make his competitive debut for Saudi Arabian first division side Al Adalh this week after completing a free transfer during the winter window.

He was the club’s fourth signing after joining as a free agent, and will be wearing jersey number 30 for the club as they prepare for their match day 23 clash at home to 5th placed Al-Jabalain.

After joining the club, he said: “I accepted the club’s offer because the President spoke to me and wanted me to help them gain promotion to the Professional League. It’s a good offer and I know we can achieve that promotion at the end of the season."

As Nigeria approach a world cup season, will a sustained stellar output in Saudi Arabia put Onazi in the frame for Super Eagles invitation should Nigeria dispatch Ghana in March?

It looks doubtful as there are other options like Innocent Bonke and Semi Ajayi playing in more competitive leagues who can deputize for Ndidi.

But in football, impossibility is nothing; after all Onazi remains available for selection.
