With the cat being finally out of the bag regarding the transfer of former Akwa United midfielder Afeez Aremu to German Bundesliga 2 side, Fc St. Pauli from Norway's IK Start (on a three-year deal), the question on every fan's lips now is: what should we expect from the midfielder from here on? Hamburg-based FC St. Pauli, who played in the main Bundesliga not that long ago in 2010, have the ambition of returning to the summit of German football. For this they have earmarked the Nigerian defensive midfielder as one of the key players to help take them back to the 'promised land'. “With Afeez we are getting an element that was missing in the squad up to now," said the club's German coach Timo Schultz. "He's the type of dynamic 'clearer' I want." Showing further excitement about what the 20 year old Nigerian tackler brings to the German club's table, their head of sports Andreas Bornemann said: "Afeez has a profile that would suit us well. He is an interesting player who, despite his young age, has a lot of experience. He's a six and has played many games in this position." Afeez is among 6 signings the club has made to help hit their targets for next season.
Regarding the defensive aspects of his game in 2020, the Ibadan-born midfielder wins on average 61% ground duels and 53% aerial ones. His accurate passes per game stands at 78% with his long balls at 50%. Though his main position is defensive midfield, he can also be pushed slightly further up to centre midfield. Even as Nigeria now has players in top 10 European leagues, there is more probability for a player in the German Bundesliga 2 to be invited to the Super Eagles rather than one playing in Scandinavia. So, this move moves Aremu closer to further Super Eagles invitation if he posts powerful performances in Germany; moreso if he plays a part in his team's promotion to the Bundesliga.
He already has 6 caps for Nigeria. With his impressive stats in Norway and expectations of the hierarchy at his new club, many expect Afeez Aremu to do well in Germany. His profile has been definitely enhanced by this move.
