Flying Eagles Vs South Africa 0:1 - Reflection

Nigeria will not be U-20 Afcon champions after coming short against rivals South Africa in a 1:0 semi-final loss.

The Flying Eagles class of 2025 have always seemed to me like a hastily sewn sweater. All you have to do is pull a loose thread before the entire sweater unravels.

A system comprised of simple passes, through passes, long balls, crosses and aggressive movements failed to displace South Africa's defence enough to produce any goal - just like in the quarter final in open play.

This situation would be compounded by the substitute goalkeeper who was 'flying by the seat of his pants' at this level. His carelessness and unreadiness led to the only goal conceded with the team's unrefined routines upfront unable to help redress or recover the setback.

That one goalkeeping misjudgement served as their death knell.

When number one netminder Harcourt was subbed off, he walked out with Nigeria's chances of progression with him.

Hopefully the team will bounce back in the consolation third place playoff.

Practical football with physical orientation needs young players who aren't only physically fit but also visionary and intelligent enough make this approach work.

These players are focused and organised but they aren't inventive and imaginative enough to create and capitalise on credible goal scoring opportunities.

I hope the coaching crew can help this team improve for the challenges ahead.
