After finding the back of the net in his last league match in Turkey some days ago, some are wondering whether Olanrewaju Kayode should be considered for another Super Eagles invitation. In 16 games this season, 26 year old Kayode has scored 8 goals making him a 1 goal per 2 games striker. That is an astonishing return for a player that has struggled to hit the dizzy heights he hit in Austria where he scored 30 goals in 67 games between 2015 to 2017. Had he stayed in Austria for one more season, he almost certainly would have gone to the world cup in Russia. But he elected to sign for Manchester City who loaned him out to Girona in Spain and then Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine where he struggled in both places to all but shut him out of Super Eagles consideration. Now he is back, back doing what he does well; score goals, and plenty of it. The question presently is that should Olanrewaju Kayode be recalled to the Super Eagles? To be honest, it will be difficult. For all his goals scoring exploits in Turkey, strikers like Iheanacho and Oshimhen are equally doing well in more competitive leagues in England and France respectively. There are other young and dynamic options open to the Super Eagles in the way of Josh Maja, Sadiq Umar, Cyriel Dessers, Chuba Akpom, Paul Onuachu and Peter Olayinka. Never say never but with all factors considered, it will be hard to see Olanrewaju Kayode return to the Super Eagles anytime soon.
